Joseph Juran

"My job of contributing to the welfare of my fellow man is the great unfinished business."
- Joseph Juran

Our “Guru of the Month,” Dr. Juran has been called the "father" of quality. Dr. Juran is recognized as the fore-most person who added the human dimension to quality. Joseph Juran broadened quality from its original statistical origin. His celebrated contributions to the world have been in the field of quality management.

Dr. Joseph Juran was born on December 24, 1904 in Braila, Romania. He moved to the United States in 1912 at the age of 8. After completing his BS in Electrical Engineering, Joseph took a job with Western Electric. His career took off as a result of a training program hosted at Bell Laboratories in 1926. Two years later, Juran published his first Pamphlet in the subject of quality, the training manual was called “Statistical Methods Applied to Manufacturing Problems.” As you may be aware, that pamphlet was added to the AT&T Statistical Quality Control Handbook, which is still used today. In 1941, Juran took a leave of absence from Western Electric and joined the assistant administration with the Lend-Lease Administration. The administration managed the shipment of goods and materials to nations during the time of war.

Dr. Juran’s reputation became increasingly reputable in 1951 when Juran published the Quality Control Handbook, which is still the standard reference work for quality managers. As a demonstrated authority on quality, Juran was in demand as a consultant and lecturer. Joseph received the Order of the sacred Treasure Award, which stated “Awarded for the development of quality control in Japan and the facilitation of the U.S. and Japanese friendship.”

Juran’s theories and principles included the three basic steps to progress, the ten steps to quality improvement, the Pareto principle, and the Juran Trilogy. Juran’s trilogy defined the three management processes required by every organization to improve: Quality control, quality improvement and quality planning. In 1979, Dr. Juran founded the Juran Institute. The Juran Institute was implemented to provide research and solutions to allow companies from diverse industries to attain the proper tools and techniques for managing quality.

“Intrinsic is the belief that quality does not happen by accident, it must be Planned!”

-Joseph Juran
